Fashion dictionary on Monday

Op maandag staat voortaan het modewoordenboek centraal. Ik probeer telkens een term kort uit te leggen zodat jullie je perfect kunnen redden in een gesprek met designers, modemensen... Vandaag: pussy bow vs. lavallière. Eigenlijk hetzelfde maar toch een beetje anders.

- pussy bow (UK): een grote, 'slappe' strik op een kledingstuk - meestal rond de hals. Omwille van de gelijkenis genoemd naar de strikken die vroeger rond de nek van kittens en katten werd gebonden.

- lavallière (FR): oorspronkelijk een losse brede strikdas - genoemd naar de hertogin van La Vallière (1644 -1710), minnares van Lodewijk XIV

My own interpretation of a pussy bow/lavallière.

From now on Monday is fashion dictionary day. I will try to explain a technical fashion term shortly so that you can all hold your own when talking fashion with designers, fashionistas...Today pussy bow vs. lavallière - basically the same but still different.

- pussy bow (UK): a big supple bow on a piece of clothing - mostly around the neck. Because of the similarity named after the bows that used to be tied around kittens' and cats' necks.

- lavallière (FR): originally a loose tie knotted like a bow - named after the duchess of La Vallière (1644 -1710), mistress of Lodewijk XIV
