Givenchy & Audrey: a fashion match made in heaven

"There isn't a woman alive who doesn't dream of looking like Audrey Hepburn." Those are the words of Hubert de Givenchy. I would like to add something to that quote: "And this is especially true when Audrey is wearing the amazing designs by Givenchy." The exhibition 'Hubert de Givenchy - To Audrey with Love' in the 'Gemeentemuseum' in The Hague focuses on the unique relationship between the designer and his muse. Hubert de Givenchy's exquisite designs are shown alongside movie fragments and pictures of Audrey Hepburn. A nice little extra: the quotes of both that are cited on walls throughout the exhibition. If you are a regular visitor of my blog you know that I love fashion quotes. I can certainly recommend a visit. Not only for Audrey aficionados but also for fashion lovers. It is amazing to see how contemporary many designs still are and to view first-hand how the DNA of the Givenchy label has changed. But you'll have to be quick because after March 26th the exhibition closes its doors.

Al bij het begin van de expo zie je dat Hubert de Givenchy's ontwerpen nog steeds 'en vogue' zijn. Statement-mouwen en ruffles zijn momenteel een hit bij fashionista's. En laat dat nu net twee kenmerken van de Bettina blouse zijn uit de jaren 50. Meteen wordt ook de link met Audrey gelegd. Je ziet immers foto's waarop ze sommige van de tentoongestelde outfits draagt.
From the beginning of the exhibition it is clear that Hubert de Givenchy's designs are still 'en vogue'. Fashionistas today are fawning over statement sleeves and ruffles. And those are two of the characteristics of the Bettina blouse from the fifties. The link with Audrey Hepburn is also immediately revealed as visitors see pictures of her in some of the outfits that are on display.

In the next room mirrors create an illusion of an infinite room filled with Givenchy evening gowns. It is enough to make any girl dream. You can see the dresses from really up close so you can marvel over the craftsmanship: thousands of beads and sequins are expertly applied. The beautiful fashion illustrations on the wall are the cherry on top.

Wat meneer de Givenchy en Audrey al door hadden: zwart is het nieuwe zwart. Dat blijkt onder andere uit de iconische jurken uit Breakfast at Tiffany's die naast de filmtaferelen getoond worden. Het zesjarige meisje dat op de expo rondliep, was het daar minder mee eens:"Dat zijn hier allemaal begrafenisjurken, mama." Ik moest ermee lachen maar de fashionista in mij was ook lichtjes geschokt ;-) "Die mening verandert nog wel", kon ik niet helpen te denken.
What monsieur de Givenchy and Audrey also knew: black is the new black. The iconic dresses from Breakfast at Tiffany's illustrate that perfectly. These dresses are shown alongside movie scenes. The six year old girl who was also visiting the exhibition didn't quite agree:"These are all funeral dresses, mom." It made me smile but the fashionista in me also gasped a little in terror ;-) "Well, your views will change, little girl", I couldn't help but thinking.

Een leuk intermezzo: halfweg de expo kan je je verkleden als Audrey en een foto maken in een 'photo boot'. Het is op de eerste plaats bedoeld voor kinderen maar ik kon er niet aan weerstaan. Om het met de quote van een andere ontwerpster te zeggen: "Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends." (Kate Spade)
A fun intermezzo: halfway through the exhibition you can dress up as Audrey Hepburn and take a picture in a photo boot. It is first and foremost intended for children but I couldn't resist. To say it in the words of another designer: "Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends." (Kate Spade)

Daarna gaat de expo door met trouwjurken, kleur (er ís meer dan alleen zwart), Audrey's vrijwilligerswerk, foto's...and of course véél meer jurken. Het is een feest voor het oog.
The exhibition continues with wedding dresses, colour (there ís more to life than black alone), Audrey's volunteer work, pictures...and of course a lot more dresses. It is a visual feast.

In het Gemeentemuseum lopen nog veel meer expo's maar ik heb er maar twee extra kort bezocht na mijn twee uur durende bezoek aan de Givenchy-expo. Nadien kon ik in de giftshop niet weerstaan aan het prachtig geïllustreerde kinderboek (door Philip Hopman) en het boek over de expo.
In the 'Gemeentemuseum' there are a lot more exhibitions but I only visited two for a short time after my two hour visit of the Givenchy exhibition. Afterwards I couldn't resist buying the beautifully illustrated children's book (by Philip Hopman) and the book about the exhibition.

Praktisch / Practical information
Je vindt alle info op de site van het Gemeentemuseum.
Wat betreft de vestiaire (niet onbelangrijk voor fashionista's): er is een bewaakte vestiaire maar eens die volhangt, zijn er alleen onbewaakte kapstokken. Maar je mag je jas ook aanhouden binnen. Voor handtassen zijn er kluisjes (zorg ervoor dat je kleingeld bij hebt). Een handtas kleiner dan een A4 mag je mee binnen nemen.

Not unimportant for fashionistas: there is a supervised cloackroom but once that is full there are only unattended coat racks. But you are allowed to keep your coat on while visiting the exhibition. There are lockers for handbags (make sure you bring change). You can take a handbag that is smaller than an A4 (paper size) inside with you.
Dat ziet er inderdaad allemaal heel stylish uit. Ik vind je oorbellen zo mooi!
