When in Florence...also go outlet shopping - The Mall is highly recommended

Firenze...heerlijk eten, cultuur op elke straathoek, Franciacorta én natuurlijk mode. Die mode beperkt zich gelukkig niet tot de (prachtige maar dure) designerboetieks in het centrum. Rond Firenze zijn er tal van outlets te vinden waar modeliefhebbers hun hartje kunnen ophalen, zoals Space and The Mall. Kortingen van 70, 80 of zelfs 90% zijn er geen uitzondering, de setting is mooi en het eten is lekker. Mijn advies: ga je naar Firenze, voorzie dan een dagje extra om de outlets te bezoeken. Florence...divine food, culture at every street corner, Franciacorta and of course fashion. Luckily the fashion part isn't limited to the gorgeous but expensive designer boutiques in the city centre. In the vicinity of the city there are a lot fashion outlets, like Space and The Mall. 70, 80 or even 90% discounts aren't an exception, the setting is beautiful and the food very good. My advice: prolong your stay in Florence with a day and visit the outlets. Read more for insider tips and to discover just how big a discount I got.

Er zijn heel wat outlets buiten Firenze. Ik heb Space (outlet van Prada en Miu Miu) en The Mall (een outletdorp met Valentino, Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Dior, Gucci...én nog véél meer) bezocht. Vlakbij The Mall zijn er nog verschillende andere outlets (waaronder die van Dolce & Gabbana) maar omdat mijn shoppingbudget na Space en The Mall op was, houden we die voor een volgend bezoek.

There are a lot of outlets just outside Florence. I visited Space (the Prada and Miu Miu outlet) and The Mall (an outlet village with Valentino, Stella McCartney, Lanvin, Dior, Gucci...and many many more). Near The Mall there are also other outlets (like the Dolce & Gabbana one) but because all my shopping money was spent we saved those for next time.

Kortingen en het assortiment /The discounts and assortment
Bij Space kocht ik een paar Miu Miu schoentjes aan 67% korting. Bij The Mall kocht ik Lanvin-laarsjes aan 77,5% korting en een jumpsuit en jurk van Stella McCartney aan 70% korting. Goeie deals dus. Tijdens de soldenperiode zijn er in The Mall 'prezzi speciali' meer daarover bij de Insider Tips.

At Space I bought an adorable pair of Miu Miu slingback flats at 67% off. At The Mall I bought Lanvin booties at a whopping 77,5% off and a Stella McCartney jumpsuit and dress at 70% off. Het assortiment van Space is goed wat betreft handtassen en schoenen. Op het vlak van kleding was ik wat teleurgesteld, ik vond er niet de Prada en Miu Miu items terug die ik in winkels al uitgebreid bewonderd had, maar steeds had laten hangen wegens te duur. Bij The Mall was ik behoorlijk onder de indruk: mooie kortingen en een assortiment dat kan wedijveren met dat van de boetieks op de Avenue Montaigne in Parijs. Outlet shopping as it should be - heel anders dan bij sommige outlets waar je maar 30% korting of zo krijgt. In beide outlets is alles mooi en overzichtelijk gepresenteerd. Space is één grote winkel, bij The Mall heb je  verschillende boetieks per designer. Space en The Mall hebben beide trouwens zowel heren- als dameskleding.

The assortment at Space is very good regarding shoes and bags. When it comes to clothing I was somewhat disappointed. I didn't find any of the Prada and Miu Miu clothing pieces I coveted which were too expensive at full price. At The Mall I was very impressed: great discounts and an assortment that can rival that of the boutiques on the Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Very different from some outlet villages that only offer a 30% discount. Both outlets present their wares very nicely. Space is one big store, at The Mall you have several boutiques each selling one designer. Both Space and The Mall offer items for men and women.

Insider tips - Space & The Mall

• Bij Space, de Prada en Miu Miu outlet, moet je een ticketje nemen als je aankomt. Er mag immers maar een beperkt aantal mensen tegelijk binnen. Mijn tip om zeker in de eerste groep binnen te mogen: ga een uurtje voor Space opent, neem eerst een ticketje aan de (heel onopvallende) metalen zuil aan de ingang en ga dan rustig iets eten of drinken in het Space Café naast de outlet (dat al vroeger open is). Let er wel op dat je een tiental minuten voor de deuren openen aan de ingang van de outlet staat met je ticketje bij de hand. En dan...ben je binnen! Let op: houd het ticketje ook binnen goed bij, je hebt het nodig om aankopen te doen (meer daarover hieronder).

  At Space, the Prada and Miu Miu outlet, you have to get a ticket because only a certain amount of people are allowed in at the same time. If you want to be sure to get in with the first batch, here's my tip: go there an hour before the outlet opens and first take a ticket at the metal column at the outlet's entrance. It's hardly noticable, but it's there. Then take your time to eat or drink something at the Space Café next to the outlet (which opens earlier). Take care to be at the entrace about ten minutes before the outlet opens and to have your ticket ready. And then...you're in! Hold on to the ticket once inside and store it in your bag because you will need it to make purchases (more about that later).

•  Alle items in Space hebben een code, die aangeeft in welke staat het item zich bevindt. Ik had het eerst niet opgemerkt - omdat alles in perfecte staat leek - tot ik een kraagje wilde passen dat niet dicht ging omdat het in de outlet apart verkocht werd maar ooit op een jurk was vastgemaakt met drukknopen.

  All items in Space have a code that signals the condition the item is in. At first I didn't notice this (cause everyting seemed in perfect condition) until I wanted to try on a collar that didn't close because it originally was part of dress (and had to be attached to it with press buttons).

•  Bij Space zijn er verschillende delen in de winkel. Je mag geen stukken van een deel meenemen naar een ander deel. De verkopers houden items die je wil proberen apart voor je. Wanneer je iets wil kopen, moet je het ticketje dat je aan de ingang nam, tonen en dan worden de items opzij gelegd aan de kassa tot wil je vertrekken en betalen.

  At Space there are different parts in the store. You cannot take an item from one part of the store into another. The salespeople will put the pieces you want to try on aside. When you want to buy something you have to show the ticket with the number you got at the entrance and the items are held for you at the cash register until you want to leave and pay.
 

• Zowel bij Space als The Mall: ga in de voormiddag en indien mogelijk op een weekdag. Dat hebben wij ook gedaan en de drukte valt dan wel mee. Hoe het in het weekend is weet ik niet, maar waarschijnlijk heel wat drukker.

  Both for Space and The Mall: if possible go during a weekday and in the morning when the outlets open. We did that and it wasn't too busy then. I don't know what it's like on weekdays but I can imagine it will be a lot busier.

• Bij The Mall was er toen wij gingen (mei 2015) bijna in elke boetiek een apart rekje met 'prezzi speciali' - items waarop extra korting werd gegeven. Soms ging er nog 50% van de outlet-prijs af, soms ging er 90% korting van de gewone prijs - kortom: superdeals. Toen ik in de Valentino-boetiek meer uitleg vroeg over de 'prezzi speciali' zei de vriendelijke verkoper dat het nu een klein deel van het assortiment was maar dat tijdens de soldenperiode alles werd verkocht aan 'prezzi speciali'. Ik ontdekte (na wat zoeken op de Facebookpagina) dat de zomersolden in The Mall telkens de eerste zaterdag van juli starten en duren tot eind augustus. Ik weet trouwens niet of er het hele jaar door 'prezzi speciali' zijn of alleen in aanloop naar de soldenperiode.
  
  When we went to The Mall (May 2015) there was a corner in almost every store with 'prezzi speciali' - items with an extra discount, sometimes there was an extra 50% discount on the outlet price, sometimes it was the normal price at 90% off - in short: extremely good deals. When I asked the friendly salesman in the Valentino boutique about the 'prezzi speciali' he said that now it was on a small assortment but that during sales everything was 'prezzi speciali'. After studying the Facebook-page of The Mall I found out that the summer sales start the first Saturday of July and last till the end of August. By the way, I don't know whether there are 'prezzi speciali' all year round or only leading up to the sales period.

•  De Gucci-winkel in The Mall was de enige winkel met een wachtrij. Aangezien we enkel iets wilden gaan eten in het Gucci Café, hadden we geen zin om aan te schuiven dus vroegen we aan de beveiligingsagent of we niet gewoon binnen mochten om naar het Café te gaan. Dat was geen probleem. Bij het vertrekken ontdekten we dat er een achteringang was naar het Café, vlak naast een van de parkeerterreinen. Dus het is niet nodig voor te kruipen. :-)

  The only store with a line at The Mall was the Gucci store. Since we thought you could only access the Gucci Café through the store we cut in line and asked if we could just enter to go to the Café. That was no problem. Later we discovered there was a back entrance next to one of the parking lots to enter the Café - so no need to cut in line. :-)

• By the way: ga zeker naar het Gucci Café in The Mall: lekker eten, helemaal niet duur, een mooi interieur, personeel strak in het Gucci-pak en een zalig terras met zicht op de omgeving.

The Mall or Space?
Als je maar tijd hebt voor één outlet, ga dan naar The Mall: er is veel meer keuze, ik vond het aanbod beter, de prijzen zijn heel goed én het is dichter bij Firenze. Er is trouwens een kleinere Prada-outlet vlak naast The Mall. Maar als je fan bent van Prada en Miu Miu (vooral van de handtassen en schoenen) is een bezoekje aan Space ook de moeite.

If you only have time to visit one oulet, go to The Mall: you have much more choice, I preferred the assortment and the prices are very sharp. And it is closer to Florence. There also is a smaller Prada outlet next to The Mall. But if you are a Prada or Miu Miu addict (especially the shoes and bags) you also have to visit Space.

Travel tips - transportation
Als je echt wil gaan outlet-shoppen in Firenze en het een mogelijkheid is: ga met de auto. De outlets liggen buiten het centrum en je zal de kofferruimte nodig hebben voor al je aankopen :-) Natuurlijk kan je ter plaatse ook een auto huren of gebruikmaken van een taxi of het openbaar vervoer (al kan een taxi wel duur zijn voor die tripjes). Sommige hotels bieden ook een shuttle service aan. Space ligt met de auto een halfuurtje buiten Firenze, The Mall een 10 à 15 minuten. De Dolce & Gabbana outlet ligt op de route naar The Mall. Een gps met Italiaanse wegenkaarten is aan te raden. Online kan je opzoeken hoe je overal geraakt met het openbaar vervoer.

If you really want to go outlet shopping in Florence and it is a possibility: go by car. The outlets are situated outside the city centre and you'll need the trunk space for all your buys :-) Of course you can rent a car locally or use a taxi or the public transportation (although a taxi will be quite expensive for these trips). Some hotels also offer a shuttle service. Space is about half an hour from Florence by car. The Mall is only a 10 to 15 minute drive. A gps navigation system with Italian maps comes in handy. Online you can do a search on how to get everywhere with public transportation.
