Only one more week to fall in love...at MoMu

Nog een week (tot Valentijnsdag) kunnen bezoekers verliefd worden op de unieke collectie schoenen die het Antwerpse ModeMuseum (MoMu) tentoonstelt in de expo FOOTPRINT: Het Spoor van Schoenen in de Mode. Only one more week (till Valentine's Day) to fall in love with the unique shoe collection that the Antwerp Fashion Museum (MoMu) displays in the exhibition FOOTPRINT: The Tracks of Shoes in Fashion. On February 13th and 14th MoMu sets up a Valentine's Action. Read more about the extraordinary shoes in the rest of this post.

Schoenenliefhebbers stappen in het MoMu een droomwereld binnen met meer dan 500 schoenen - van Margiela-schoenen die je met plakband rond de voet moet bevestigen en schoenen die enkel bestaan uit een hak en riempjes (zonder zool) over creaties van de grondleggers van de hedendaagse schoen - Roger Vivier en Salvatore Ferragamo - tot ontwerpen van hedendaagse jetset-lieveling Tabitha Simmons. De Antwerpse ontwerpers ontbreken niet op de tentoonstelling. Ann Demeulemeester, A.F. Vandevorst, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs,… creëerden stuk voor stuk baanbrekende ontwerpen .
Shoe lovers enter a dream world when visiting the exhibition which showcases more than 500 shoes - from Margiela shoes which you have to fasten around your foot with tape and shoes that only consist of a heel and straps (no sole) over creations of the founders of the contemporary shoe - Roger Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo - to designs by jetset-designer Tabitha Simmons. The Antwerp designers are also represented in the exhibition. Ann Demeulemeester, A.F. Vandevorst, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs,…all created groundbreaking shoe designs.

The exhibition doesn't want to focus on the history of shoe design or the technical aspect of making shoes, but wants to fascinate and evoke emotion with innovative and inspiring shoe designs - showing that "Anything can be shoe."

Weetjes/ Fun Facts
- Salvatore Ferragamo maakte schoenen op maat voor verschillende Hollywood-diva’s zoals Marilyn Monroe. Hij heeft de actrice evenwel nooit ontmoet. Op de expo zie je niet alleen een hele reeks van haar schoenen maar ook de leest waarop haar schoenen op maat gemaakt werden.
Salvatore Ferragamo made shoes for several Hollywood screen goddesses like Marilyn Monroe. He never actually met the actress in person though.The exhibition not only shows several of the shoes she wore but also the last Ferragamo used for her customized shoes.

- Ferragamo was erg inventief. Rond de periode van de Tweede Wereldoorlog maakte hij glamoureuze schoenen uit visdraad, kurk, glasscherven, snoepjespapier, raffia...in plaats van leder.
Ferragamo was very inventive. Around the time of the Second World War he created glamourous shoes using fishing line, cork, glass shards, candy wrappers...instead of leather.

- Schoenen zijn niet altijd bedoeld om op te lopen, zoals sommige ontwerpen van Hellstern (een beroemde Parijse 'bottier' die van 1870 tot 1920 alle modieuze vrouwenvoeten kleedde).
Shoes aren't always meant to walk in, like some designes by Hellstern (a famous Parisian 'bottier' who dressed all fashionable women's feet from 1870 to 1920).

The Vivienne Westwood shoes (with a 23 cm platform) in which Noami Campbell fell on the runway in 1993 are also shown in the exhibition.

- Het startpunt van de tentoonstelling is het langdurige bruikleen van verzamelaars Geert Bruloot en Eddy Michiels (ook de eigenaars van dé schoenenwinkel van Antwerpen Coccodrillo), aangevuld
met meer dan 400 unieke stukken uit ontwerpers- en
verzamelaarsarchieven en belangrijke internationale musea.
The starting point of the exhibition is the shoe collection the museum has on loan from collectors Geert Bruloot and Eddy Michiels (the owners of Antwerp's best known shoe store Coccodrillo), completed with more than 400 unique pieces from the archives of collectors and designers and international museums.

- Roger Vivier was beeldhouwer van opleiding, iets dat nog zichtbaar is in de gesculpteerde elementen van zijn schoenen.
Roger Vivier studied to be a sculptor, something that is still visible in some of the sculpted elements of his shoes.

- Manolo Blahnik kreeg zijn liefde voor schoenen van zijn moeder mee. Zij maakte zelf de schoenen na die ze in modemagazines zag omdat ze de schoenen die ze kon kopen in het dorpje niet goed genoeg vond.
Manolo Blahnik didn't get his love for shoes from strangers. His mother inspired him. She used to make her own shoes based on what she saw in fashion magazines because she didn't like the ones she could buy in her hometown.

“Bedoeling van de tentoonstelling is emotie oproepen”, vertelt curator Geert Bruloot,”Die emotie is vandaag deels verdwenen uit de modewereld. Alles draait tegenwoordig om het product: de nieuwe It Bag, enzovoort. Dat willen we hier niet doen. We willen verwondering oproepen en bezoekers uitzonderlijke creaties tonen. Ik wil mijn passie delen.” De emotie die Geert had toen de expo klaar was? "Toen de scenografie klaar was - die Dodi Espinosa verzorgde – en de schoenen werden geplaatst, was het dolle pret. Iedereen was blij en we voelden dat de expo goed zat. Lol is belangrijk."
"With the exhibiotion we want to evoke emotion", tells curator Geert Bruloot,"Nowadays that emotion is largely gone in the fashion world. Today everything is about the product: the newest It Bag and so on. That' something we don't want to do here. We want to evoke wonderment and show visitors extraordinary creations. I want to share my passion. Which emotion did Geert have when the exhibition was ready? "When the scenography (by Dodi Espinosa - was ready and the shoes were placed, it was a really fun time. Everybody was happy and we felt that the exhibition was right. Fun is important."
