New exhibition at MoMu Antwerp: contemporary fashion from the archives of the museum

De tentoonstelling MOMU NU toont een selectie topstukken uit de recentste aanwinsten van hedendaagse silhouetten uit de MoMu collectie. Als ze deze expo bezoeken, zullen fashionista's waarschijnlijk denken "Ik wou dat mijn kleerkast er uitzag zoals het archief van het MoMu." Al zou voor de ruim 25 000 objecten van de MoMu collectie (voornamelijk kleding en accessoires) een kleerkast niet volstaan. Natuurlijk worden deze objecten niet allemaal getoond in de expo die zich focust op een aantal bijzonder stukken van voornamelijk Belgische ontwerpers én ontwerpers die een link hebben met Antwerpen (zoals Peter Pilotto, het label waarvan het ontwerpersduo in Antwerpen studeerde). De tentoonstelling is opgebouwd rond bepaalde kenmerkende thema's zoals gala, goud & zilver, plastics, floralia...

The exhibition MOMU NOW showcases a selection of newly added masterpieces of contemporary silhouettes of the MoMu (the Antwerp fashion museum) collection. Upon visiting the exhibition a lot of fashionistas will exclaim "I wish my closet looked like the MoMu archives." But a simple closet wouldn't do for the approximately 25,000 objects (mainly clothing and accessories) of the collection. Of course not all 25 000 pieces are shown in this exhibition which focuses primarily on Belgian designers ánd designers that somehow have a connection with Antwerp (like Peter Pilotto of which the designer duo studied there). The exhibition is built around distinctive themes such as gala, gold & silver, plastics, florals...

Zes weetjes  / Six facts

• Hedendaagse kleding is - in tegenstelling tot wat men zou denken - veel gevoeliger dan historische kleding. Vroeger werden kledingstukken echt gemaakt om lang mee te gaan, terwijl ze nu sneller vervangen worden en soms zelfs alleen een catwalk-show overleven. Daarom staan bijna alle silhouetten achter glas. Zo kunnen bezoekers ze toch van heel dichtbij zien zonder risico op beschadiging.
• Eens het MoMu de kleding heeft aangekocht, zullen de kleren nooit meer gedragen worden. Dit ook om ze te beschermen. Daarom worden in het magazine alle silhouetten ook op paspoppen getoond.
• Bezoek zeker de Antwerpse tweedehandswinkels Rosier 41(adres: Rosier 41, Antwerpen) en Labels Inc (Aalmoezenierstraat 3, Antwerpen). Sommige stukken uit de MoMu collectie werden daar gevonden.
• Bernard Willhelm schonk vroeger telkens zijn volledige collectie aan het MoMu, zon' 240 stuks. Omwille van de beperkte ruimte die het museum ter beschikking heeft wordt er nu elke seizoen een selectie gemaakt uit de collectie.
• De expo toont enkele stukken van ontwerper Helmut Lang, ook al is er niet meteen een link met België of Antwerpen. Toen deze ontwerper echter besliste te stoppen, schonk hij zijn archief aan 5 modemusea van over de wereld waarvan het MoMu er één is. Het museum is dan ook terecht trots op deze stukken.
• Sommige moderne stoffen/materialen zijn trouwens wel erg gevoelig. Zo smelt plastic gewoon bij te warme temperaturen. De nieuwe materialen stellen het MoMu dus voor een uitdaging op het vlak van bewaren.

• Contemporary clothes are - contrary to what one would expect - a lot more fragile than historical pieces. Before clothes were made to last a long time whereas today everything changes quickly and sometimes clothes are even made just to survive a runway show. That's why the MoMu decided to display the clothes behind glass. That way visitors can see the clothes from really up close without there being any risk for the pieces being damaged.
• Once the museum has bought the clothes they will never be worn again. This is also done to protect the clothes and is the reason why the magazine shows all the silhouettes on dress forms.
• Be sure to visit the Antwerp based second-hand stores Rosier 41(address: Rosier 41, Antwerp) and Labels Inc (Aalmoezenierstraat 3, Antwerp). Some of the pieces of the MoMu collection were found there.
• Bernard Willhelm used to gift his entire collection to the MoMu each season (about 240 pieces). Because of the limited storage capacity of the museum now a selection is made each season.
• The exhibition also shows some pieces of fashion designer Helmut Lang, although he hasn't got a connection with Belgium or Antwerp. But upon retiring this designer decided to give his collection to 5 fashion museums from all over the world, of which the MoMu was one. The museum is rightly proud of these pieces.
• Some newer materials are very delicate indeed. Plastic simply melts when it's too hot. The new materials present the MoMu with a storage challenge.

Bekende namen op de tentoonstelling / Famous designers at the exhibition
Sterke namen uit de Belgische modescene zoals Raf Simons, Haider Ackermann, Walter Van Beirendonck, Veronique Branquinho, A.F. Vandevorst en Ann Demeulemeester, maar ook jongere talenten als Christian Wijnants en Peter Pilotto komen aan bod. Daarnaast ontving MoMu de laatste jaren ook schenkingen van grote buitenlandse modehuizen (o.a. Balenciaga, Helmut Lang) dankzij internationale relaties, evenals langdurige bruiklenen van iconische Antwerpse privépersonen en -verzamelingen. Ook daarvan wordt een selectie silhouetten getoond. Tot slot werden via MoMu+Friends, de vriendenwerking van het museum, enkele belangrijke silhouetten verworven, onder andere van Raf Simons voor het Franse modehuis Christian Dior.

This selection of the collection includes notable names from the Belgian fashion scene such as Raf Simons, Haider Ackermann, Walter van Beierendonck, Veronique Branquinho, A.F. Vandevorst and Ann Demeulemeester, but also younger talents such as Christian Wijnants and Peter Pilotto. These pieces are standing alongside silhouettes donated by major foreign fashion houses (including Balenciaga, Helmut Lang). There also have been donations from other international fashion houses and long-term loans from iconic Antwerp individuals and private collections. Through the museum’s new circle of friends certain important silhouettes were acquired, including those from Raf Simons for the French fashion house Christian Dior.

De MoMu collectie / The MoMu collection
Het MoMu verzamelbeleid focust naast historische kleding voornamelijk op hedendaagse Belgische ontwerpers en ontwerpers die een link hebben met Antwerpen, en koopt van hen silhouetten aan die staaltjes zijn van rigoureus vakmanschap, gedurfde concepten en avant-garde vormentaal. Van de 25 000 objecten is ongeveer de helft historisch en de helft hedendaags. Zo'n 7000 items zijn er de laatste vijf jaren bijgekomen door aankopen, schenkingen en langdurige bruiklenen.

In addition to historic pieces, MoMu’s collection policy primarily focuses on purchasing pieces by contemporary Belgian designers and designers who have a connection with Antwerp whose silhouettes are stunning examples of excellent craftsmanship, bold concepts and avant-garde lines. About half of the 25,000 objects are historical pieces, half are contemporary. About 7,000 objects have been added over the past five years thanks to new purchases, gifts and long-term loans.
