Stuff with a story at pop-up store STuff & STories

Antwerpen is een modestad in beweging, waar telkens weer nieuwe leuke adresjes opduiken. Zo ook de pop-upstore van Madame SuperTrash (zoals ze zichzelf op Twitter noemt) Olcay Gulsen, STuff & STories genaamd. In het charmante winkeltje kan je nog tot oktober unieke sample-stukken van de SuperTrash-collectie ontdekken én ook items uit de kleerkast van Olcay zelf. Allemaal exclusieve stukken met een verhaal. "A one-off SuperTrash, an item with a unique Story." staat op de prijskaartjes. En dat allemaal aan wel heel aantrekkelijke prijzen. Jurkjes van de SuperTrash-collectie heb je bv. al vanaf 40 euro en echte designerstuks (denk aan bv. Dolce & Gabbana en Stella McCartney) die nieuw gemakkelijk duizend euro of nog veel meer kosten, kan je er kopen vanaf 200 tot ongeveer 500 euro. Extra leuk voor modeliefhebbers is het feit dat Olcay deze stukken zelf heeft gedragen. Aan sommige kledingstukken hangt zelfs een foto waarop Olcay het kledingstuk in kwestie draagt.
Antwerp is a fashion city on the move, new and fun shopping addresses emerge all the time. A recent example is the pop-up store by Madame SuperTrash (as she calls herself on Twitter) Olcay Gulsen, named STuff & STories. In the charming boutique you can find unique SuperTrash sample pieces ànd items from Olcay's own wardrobe. All exclusive items with a story "A one-off SuperTrash, an item with a unique Story." it says on the price tags. And those prices are very interesting. Sample dresses from the SuperTrash collection for example are available for only 40 euro and real designer pieces (think Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney...) that easily cost 1000 euro or a lot more new, retail from 200 to 500 euro. For real fashion lovers it is a plus that Olcay has worn these pieces herself. At some clothing pieces there is even a picture attached of Olcay wearing the garment.

Ik kon trouwens niet weerstaan aan een Mathilda blazer van Stella McCartney. Ik hoop dat ik er even goed mee sta als Olcay. En er staan nog wel wat items op mijn wishlist.
I couldn't resist a Mathilda blazer by Stella McCartney myself. I hope I look as good in it as Olcay. And there are also a few other items on my wishlist.

Tot oktober 2014 kan je nog terecht in de Wiegstraat 12. De supervriendelijke verkoopster staat je er met raad en daad bij. Voor elke fashionista die Antwerpen bezoekt, is het een must om langs dit winkeltje te gaan. Het is open van 11 tot 18 uur, gesloten op zondag. Nog een praktische bedenking: de kleding is enkel te verkrijgen in kleine maatjes (sample sizes, weet je wel, en Olcay is zelf ook 'très petite'). Maar gelukkig passen de accessoires zoals handtassen en juwelen, voor iedereen. De schoenen variëren in maat.
Until October 2014 you can visit this store in the Wiegstraat 12. The very friendly salesgirl will be glad to help you. This address is simply a must for every fashionista visiting Antwerp. It is opened from 11 am to 6 pm and closed on Sundays. A last practical remark: the clothes are only available in small sizes (sample sizes, you know, and Olcay herself is also very petite). Luckily the accessories like handbags and jewelry are one size fits all. The shoes vary in size.

Het verhaal achter de winkel / The story behind the store
Ik interviewde Olcay trouwens per mail over de pop-upstore, de verhalen en herinneringen die aan kleding kunnen vasthangen, en over Antwerpen natuurlijk.
I interviewed Olcay by mail about the pop-upstore, about the stories and memories that can be attached to clothes and about Antwerp of course.
Hoe ben je op het idee gekomen voor STuff &STories?
Van elke collectie gaan er altijd een aantal items niet door. Hiervan hebben we wel steeds een aantal samples. Deze vertellen elk een verhaal (over het ontstaan van de collectie nvdr.). Het leek ons dus een goed idee om dit kleine verhaaltje toch aan de consument te laten zien, en het item te delen.
Where did you get the idea for STuff & STories?
In every collection there are items that don't make it into the final collection. But there are always a few samples of those items. They all tell a story (about how the collection growed - editor's note). It seemed like a good idea to tell this little story to the customers, to share the items with them.

Waarom heb je voor Antwerpen gekozen en niet Amsterdam?
Het pand in Antwerpen kwam op mijn pad en we zagen een kans.We hebben besloten om dit concept hier te testen. In Amsterdam willen we dit ook gaan doen maar we vonden nog niet de juiste plek in de stad.
Why did you open the store in Antwerp and not Amsterdam?
I came accross the location in Antwerp and we saw an opportunity. We deciced to test the concept here. We have similar plans for a store like this in Amsterdam, but we just haven't found the right location yet.

Welk vind je zelf het leukste stuk in de winkel?
Ik heb niet echt een favoriet. Vooral aan de stukken die uit mijn eigen kast komen, hangen stuk voor stuk leuke herinneringen uit mijn leven vast. Met de items uit de collectie is de herinnering er vaak niet, maar wel het verhaal. Het kan zo zijn dat we bijvoorbeeld een bepaalde print wel voor een jurkje door hebben laten gaan in de uiteindelijke collectie, maar niet voor een broek. Die broek is dan het item dat te koop is in deze pop-upstore.
Which item in the store do you like the most?
I don't really have a favorite item. Especially the clothes that come from my own wardrobe all have nice memories attached to them. With the sample items from SuperTrash there aren't those memories, but there is always a story. It is for example possible that we used a certain print for a dress but decided not to use it for pants in the final collection. Those pants are the item you can find in this pop-up store.

De naam STuff &STories verwijst
naar de verhalen die aan de kledingstukken vasthangen. Heb je zelf zo'n
stuk met een uniek verhaal? ( Ik heb er nu alvast eentje met het Stella
McCartney jasje dat ik in jouw winkel kocht en dat eerst van jou was.)
De meeste jurkjes heb ik aangehad
op belangrijke evenementen, dus daar zit een mooie herinnering aan vast. Daarnaast weet ik ook nog precies altijd met wie en waar ik het kledingstuk kocht. Dus wat er is gebeurd voorafgaand aan de avond dat ik het
jurkje droeg, is meestal ook al een verhaal/herinnering.
The name STuff & STories refers to the stories that are attached to clothes. Do you yourself have a clothing item with a unique story? (I now already have a nice story because I bought the Stella McCartney blazer that you previously owned.)
I wore most of the dresses to important events, so that already is a a beautiful memory in its own. What's more, I also always exactly know where I bought the clothes and who was with me at the time. So also what happened previously to wearing the dress, is a story/memory most of the time.

Was het niet moeilijk om afscheid te nemen van de stukken uit je eigen kleerkast? Waarom doe je ze toch weg?
Het
is altijd lastig om afstand te doen van mooie items uit je kast die vol
zitten met herinneringen, maar het geeft ook weer lucht in je kast. En soms is het gewoon
tijd om nieuwe dingen toe te voegen aan je garderobe, je stijl blijft zich altijd ontwikkelen.
Wasn't it difficult to say goodbye to the clothes from your own wardrobe? Why are you selling them?
It is always difficult to give up beautiful clothing items that are filled with memories. But sometimes it is just time to make some room in your closet for new items and memories. What's more, your style always evolves.
Tot slot: wat zijn je favoriete plekjes in Antwerpen?
Dat zijn er meerdere, een lange lijst zelfs, maar overnachten doe ik bij Les Nuits midden in de stad.
Finally, what are your favorite places in Antwerp?
There are a lot of those, it's a long list. But when I stay over I always sleep at Les Nuits in the city centre.
