Only one more week to visit the exhibition at MoMu - 50 years of fashion studies in Antwerp up close

Gisteren herbezocht ik eindelijk de expo in het Antwerpse ModeMuseum (kortweg MoMu). Tijdens de opening was ik er al geweest, maar door de vele bezoekers kon ik de tentoonstelling toen niet goed in me opnemen. Nu kon ik in alle rust de expo ontdekken - bijna privé want het was dinsdagavond erg kalm. En het is de moeite - letterlijk een 'visual overload' van creativitiet en kunde. Eigenlijk is één bezoek te kort om alles te ontdekken - tenzij je er een hele dag voor uittrekt. De tentoonstelling 'Happy Birthday Dear Academie! 50 jaar Modeafdeling' loopt nog tot en met 16 februari. Dus waar wachten jullie op - rep je naar de Nationalestraat. (Na deze post gelezen te hebben natuurlijk.)

Yesterday I finally revisited the exhibition in the Antwerp fashion museum MoMu. I had already seen it during the opening but because of the many visitors then I didn't get a real feel of it. Now I could discover the magnificent exhibition quietly - almost privately as there were few visitors on a Tuesday evening. It was certainly worth it - it's a literal visual overload of creativity and craftsmanship. Actually one visit is too short to fully appreciate everything - unless you make it last a day. You can still visit the exhibition 'Happy Birthday Dear Academie! 50 Years Antwerp Fashion Department' until February 16th (included). So what are you waiting for - hurry to the Nationalestraat. (After reading this post of course.)

In de rest van deze post geef ik eerst mijn eigen impressies gevolgd door wat uitleg over de expo. In the rest of this blogpost I will first give you my own impressions followed by some information about the exhibition.

Ik vond het geweldig om ontwerpen en schetsen te ontdekken van mijn favoriete ontwerpers die aan de Modeafdeling van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen gestudeerd hebben. Het is uitermate boeiend om te zien hoe ze gestart zijn. Laarzen van Bruno Pieters uit 1999, een outfit die Tim Van Steenbergen maakte in 2000 en niet te vergeten de ontwerpen van Peter Pilotto en Christopher De Vos die nu samen het bij modeliefhebbers gewaardeerde merk 'Peter Pilotto' maken, maar toen nog apart werkten. Deze twee ontmoetten elkaar trouwens in 2000 op de Academie. Zonder hun studies daar zouden we nooit van hun geniale samenwerking hebben kunnen genieten. Tijdens hun studies al zag je dat Peter Pilotto zich meer op print en stoffen richtte en dat Christopher De Vos zich iets meer focuste op de drapage en het silhouet. Zo verdelen ze het werk nog altijd.  De befaamde Antwerpse Zes hebben hun eigen ruimte op de expo.

I just loved seeing designs and sketches from my favourite designers who studied at the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. It is so interesting to see how they started out. Boots by Bruno Pieters from 1999, an outfit by Tim Van Steenbergen from 2000 and of course the designs by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos who now design together for the coveted label 'Peter Pilotto'. These two met each other by the way in 2000 at the Academy. Without their studies there the fashion world would have been deprived of their genius collaboration. You could then already see that Peter Pilotto focused more on prints and fabrics, and Christopher De Vos on silhouette and drape - now they still each concentrate on those aspects while working together. The famous Antwerp Six have their own room in the exhibition.

Bovendien is het erg interessant om te zien dat stukken die de studenten bv. in de jaren '80 maakten nog steeds verrassend actueel zijn. Blijkbaar raakt creativiteit niet zo snel gedateerd als meer mainstream trends.

What's more, it is extremely fascinating to see that pieces that students created in for example the eighties still have a modern feel. Apparently creativity doesn't date as fast as mainstream trends.

Naast de collectiestukken die de ontwerpers maakten terwijl ze aan de Academie studeerden, zijn er ook staaltjes te zien van hun huidige kunnen. De silhouetten uit hun collecties tonen aan dat ze vakmanschap en creativiteit nog steeds hoog in het vaandel dragen - iets wat ze aan de Antwerpse Modeafdeling geleerd hebben.

Along with the collection pieces that the designers created while studying at the Academy, the exhibition also shows what they do nowadays. The pieces from their own collections prove that they still attach much importance to craftsmanship and creativity. Something they learned at the fashion department of the Academy.

Een van de redenen dat ik extra genoten heb van de expo is de policy van het MoMu om zo weinig mogelijk items achter glas te zetten. Je kan letterlijk met je neus boven de silhouetten gaan hangen en de textuur van de stoffen tot in het kleinste detail zien - dit alles zonder de kledij aan te raken natuurlijk. Dat voegt een extra zintuiglijk facet toe aan de expo.

One of the reasons I personally extra enjoyed the expo is MoMu's policy to place as little items as possible behind glass. You can literally stand only a few centimetres away from the silhouettes and really see the fabrics' textures in detail - all the while without touching anything of course. This adds something to the whole experience.

Tot slot hangen er ook schetsen van alumni van vroeger en nu, wel twee muren vol. Het is eens te meer leuk om de creativiteit te zien en om de schetsen van je favoriete ontwerpers te ontdekken.

Last but certainly not least there are also two walls filled with sketches by alumni of all eras. Once more it is fun to see the creativity and to discover sketches from your own favourite designers.

Over de expo
In het kort de opzet van de expo: 'Happy Birthday Dear Academie. 50 Jaar Modeafdeling' viert het 50-jarige bestaan van de modeafdeling van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen. Opgericht in 1963 door Mary Prijot is deze school in de afgelopen 50 jaar uitgegroeid tot een internationale broeihaard van modetalent, met studenten uit meer dan 32 landen. Aan de hand van verschillende thema’s, die als een rode draad doorheen het afstudeerwerk van de verschillende generaties studenten lopen, schetst deze tentoonstelling een beeld van de opleiding. Studenten worden hierbij aangespoord om tot het uiterste te gaan in hun creatieve kunnen en een artistieke signatuur te ontwikkelen die als basis kan dienen voor hun hele verdere carrière.

About the exhibition
A quick description of the exhibition: 'Happy Birthday Dear Academie. 50 Years Antwerp Fashion Department' is one of the many projects of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp celebrating its 350th anniversary. The exhibition highlights various aspects of Antwerp fashion education during the first fifty years of its existence. It also paints a picture of the programme as an artistic cocoon. Students are encouraged to achieve their utmost potential and expand their skills as well as developing an artistic signature on which they can build their future career. The exhibition illustrates how diverse the careers of the Academy's alumni are and how this programme has left a mark on the international fashion world.
