Tuesday Book Club: Southern Charm
Een charmante roman, dat vat het eerste boek van auteur Tinsley Mortimer het best samen. De titel 'Southern Charm' is dus goed gekozen. Het is een vrolijk en vlot verhaaltje over een meisje uit een rijke familie in Charleston dat haar geluk beproeft in New York City. Ze droomt ervan ontwerpster te worden en terwijl ze probeert haar sporen te verdienen, ontmoet ze een 'crush' uit haar jeugd. Het is een echt 'feel good'-verhaal want hoewel het hoofdpersonage niet meteen haar droomjob vindt en ze niet zeker weet of haar jeugdliefde wel zo eerlijk is, twijfel je er als lezer geen moment aan dat het goed met haar zal aflopen. Veel echt drama is er dus niet bij, maar soms is dat ook niet nodig.
Alhoewel dit boek heel luchtig is en niet erg diep graaft (of zelfs helemaal niet), heb ik ervan genoten. En laten we eerlijk zijn: soms heeft een meisje gewoon nood aan een modern sprookje overgoten met mode en champagne. Als je de biografie van auteur Tinsley Mortimer leest, blijkt dat haar leven wel wat gelijkenissen vertoont met dat van hoofdpersonage Minty Davenport. Dat maakt de insider-kijkjes in de wereld van de socialites uit NY extra leuk.

It is an upbeat and fluently written story about a girl that moves from her rich family in Charleston to New York City. She wants to try her luck there and dreams of being a fashion designer. While she tries to make it as an 'it girl' in the fashion world, she reconnects with an old flame from her youth. It really is a feel good story because although the main character doesn't immediately land her dream job and isn't so sure about the honesty of her crush, the reader never doubts the story's happy ending. There isn't a lot of real drama, but sometimes there doesn't need to be.
Although this book is very light-hearted and doesn't dig deep (or at all), I truly enjoyed it. And let's be honest: sometimes a girl just needs a modern fairytale sprinkled with fashion and champagne. If you read the biography of author Tinsley Mortimer, her story shows a lot of resemblance to that of main character Minty Davenport. That adds a nice touch to the insider views into the live of NY's socialites.

Op dinsdagen dat er geen cartoon is, breng ik voortaan een review van een boek - veelal een roman - die iets met de modewereld te maken heeft. Mode hoeft niet het hoofdonderwerp te zijn, maar zal altijd wel op de een of andere manier aan bod komen. Ik lees zelf heel graag boeken met een modesausje, maar vind het niet altijd makkelijk om dergelijke boeken te vinden. Met deze rubriek wil ik het wat makkelijker maken voor gelijkgestemde zielen.
On the 'cartoonless' Tuesdays I will write a book review - mostly about a work of fiction -about a book that has something to do with the world of fashion. It doesn't have to be the focal point of the story but it will be a part of it. I love to read books with a touch of fashion in them myself but I don't always find it that easy to find such books.
