That's why she throws herself in a new career: she wants to help her BGF (Best Gay Forever) Julian Tennant to get one (or more) of his dresses on the red carpet of the Oscars. But it soon is clear that it isn't that easy to convince fickle Hollywood divas to wear a dress of a beginning designer - as seen in the trailer. Her best friends Kate Woods, ambitious agent of the stars, and Cricket, a hopeful aspiring actress, try to help her while also going after their own dreams. And then Lola's ex resurfaces.

Een minpuntje toch: ik had in het begin wat moeite met de schrijfstijl van het auteursduo, het boek leest aanvankelijk niet zo vlot, maar na een aantal bladzijden, word je toch meegezogen in de wereld van Lola & co. Toen ik het boek een tweede keer las, apprecieerde ik het meer.
One minor point of criticism: at first I had a little difficulty with the writing of the authors, the book doesn't read that fluently in the beginning. But after a few pages, you are sucked into the story and the world of Lola & co. When I read the book a second time, I appreciated it more.

Project Runway), filmpremières, modeshows, gekke supermodellen en acteurs, cover shoots, magazineredacteuren from hell, Cola Lights aan 12 dollar...staan op het menu terwijl de champagne en bellini's rijkelijk vloeien. Lola probeer een evenwicht te vinden tussen haar liefdesleven en haar job als CEO van modeontwerper Julian Tennant. Na de crisis is het héél moeilijk om de getalenteerde ontwerper aan het werk te houden.
The sequel is just as good as the original - contrary to many movie sequels. The writing of the authors has evolved and book number two is written much more fluently. This time Lola and her friends go to Cannes, where the movie and fashion circus is even crazier than in LA. Reality shows (Cut-throat Couture instead of Project Runway), movie premières, fashion shows, crazy supermodels and actors, cover shoots, magazine editores from hell, diet Cokes priced 12 dollar...are on the menu while the champagne and bellinis flow abundantly. Lola tries to find a balance between her love life and her job as CEO of fashion designer Julian Tennant. After the economy crisis it is very difficult to keep a talented designer from losing his job.
Hetzelfde oppervlakkige glamoureuze wereldje als in boek één dus met dezelfde scherpe observaties, maar op een andere locatie. De boeken zijn aanraders voor wie houdt van achter-de-schermen-verhalen die een blik werpen op een glamoureuze wereld. Het is echter geen bonkbuster of pure chick-lit, meer een satire verpakt in een vlot geschreven luchtige roman.
The same superficial glamorous world from book 1 sets the scene accompanied by the same witty observations, but on another location. I recommend these books if you like stories that show you a glimpse behind the scenes of another world. It isn't a bonkbuster or real chick lit, more a satire packed in a breezy seemingly shallow novel.
Een tip nog: lees eerst boek één of boek twee is moeilijker te volgen. Ikzelf ben begonnen in Beneath a Starlet Sky en heb het na 20 pagina's opzij gelegd om eerst nog eens Celebutantes te lezen. Daarna las ik met veel plezier het vervolg.
One more piece of advice: read the first book before starting the second. I started reading Beneath a Starlet Sky and put it aside after 20 pages to reread Celebutantes first. After that I really enjoyed the sequel.
Ik heb de boeken in het Engels gelezen, maar ze zijn ondertussen ook al vertaald in het Nederlands als 'De Galaprinses' en 'Vallende sterren'.
