Tuesday Book Club: The Cuckoo's Calling
De cartoons liggen eventjes stil, maar niet getreurd, vandaag weer een Tuesday Book Club.

Op dinsdagen dat er geen cartoon is, breng ik voortaan een review van een boek - veelal een roman - die iets met de modewereld te maken heeft. Mode hoeft niet het hoofdonderwerp te zijn, maar zal altijd wel op de een of andere manier aan bod komen. Ik lees zelf heel graag boeken met een modesausje, maar vind het niet altijd makkelijk om dergelijke boeken te vinden. Met deze rubriek wil ik het wat makkelijker maken voor gelijkgestemde zielen. Deze week: The Cuckoo's Calling (Koekoeksjong) van Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling.

It doesn't have to be the focal point of the story but it will be a part of it. I love to read books with a touch of fashion in them myself but I don't always find it that easy to find such books. With this blog feature I want to help kindred spirits. This week: The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling.
Ik heb dit boek pas ontdekt toen in de media uitlekte dat J.K. Rowling het onder een pseudoniem geschreven had. Maar dat is niet de reden dat ik het gelezen heb. J.K. Rowlings eerste boek voor volwassenen heb ik immers (nog) niet gelezen omdat de plot me minder aanspreekt. Dit verhaal sprak me echter onmiddellijk aan: een topmodel valt naar beneden van haar balkon en iedereen denkt aan zelfmoord. Of toch niet iedereen: haar adoptiebroer schakelt immers privédetective Cormoran Strike in om te bewijzen dat het moord is. Deze heeft net een nieuwe secretaresse Robin, die ook een belangrijke rol speelt in het verhaal. Strike heeft af te rekenen met zijn eigen demonen maar neemt de job toch aan. I only discovered this book, after it was leaked to the media that J.K. Rowling had written it using a pseudonym. But that is not the reason I read it. I didn't (yet) read J.K. Rowling's first adult novel, simply because the plot summary didn't really appeal to me. This one however did the trick: a top model plummets to her death from her balcony. Everyone suspects suicide...although not exactly everyone. Her adopted brother wants to hire private detective Cormoran Strike to prove it was murder. Strike has just gotten a new secretary, Robin, who will play an important role in the story. The detective has his on demons to deal with but decides to take the job. Until this far the plot summary, there are more extensive versions online.
Waarom ik het een aanrader vind
Voor mij is het boek een absolute aanrader en wel om volgende redenen:
- Het is gewoon heel goed geschreven (het allerbelangrijkste, lijkt mij).
- Het is - zoals het wordt geprezen - inderdaad een detective in de stijl van Agatha Christie, in een hedendaagse versie weliswaar. Strike ontdekt vooral dingen door te praten - zij het op een iets ruwere wijze dan de alom gekende Hercule Poirot. Ik verkies dit boven hevige actiescenes, maar dat is persoonlijke smaak.
- Toen uitkwam dat J.K. Rowling het boek had geschreven was iedereen verbaasd dat het niet door een man was geschreven. J.K. Rowling slaagt er immers erg goed in het mannelijke hoofdpersonage te vatten. Maar toch spreekt er uit andere passages dan weer duidelijk een vrouw - wanneer ze over kleding schrijft bijvoorbeeld. Er is dus een mooi evenwicht tussen het mannelijke en vrouwelijke aspect waardoor het beide seksen kan aanspreken.
- Dat brengt me bij het laatste aspect waardoor het boek voor mij als a fashion girl een echte aanrader is: er zit een modekantje aan. Er sterft een supermodel en Strike moet zich dus wagen in het wereldje van topdesigners, socialites, golddiggers, persoonlijke chauffeurs...én zelfs kledingwinkels. Er zit ook de nodige humor in. Zo heten de katten van de modeontwerper Viktor & Rolf. De beschrijving van een foto doet dan weer denken aan een fotoshoot die Tyra Banks voor America's Next Top Model zou opzetten. Hoewel mode helemaal niet het hoofdonderwerp is, zijn er genoeg verwijzingen om het voor modeliefhebbers net dat tikkeltje extra te geven.

Why I absolutely recommend this book
I recommend this book for the following reasons:
- It is written very well - the most important thing in my opinion.
- It is praised as a classic detective 'Agatha Christie'-style in a modern setting. And this is the case. Strike discovers the truth mainly by talking - although he is a little more rough around the edges than that other detective, Hercule Poirot. I prefer this to action packed scenes, but that is personal taste.
- When it became known that J.K. Rowling had written the book, everyone was surprised that it wasn't written by a man since the essence of the main character is captured that well. But other parts of the book - for me - clearly show a female writer. When she talks about clothes for example. All in all this leads to a nice balance between the male and female aspect thus appealing to both men and women.
- This brings me to the final aspect that makes me - as a fashion girl - love the book: it has a sense of fashion. A supermodel dies, so Strike has to immerse himself into the wordl of designers, socialites, golddiggers, personal drivers...and even clothing stores. It also has some humour, like the cats of the designer that are named Viktor & Rolf. The description of a picture reminds me of an America's Next Top Model photo shoot that Tyra would stage. So although fashion isn't the focal point at all, there are enough references to give the book just that little bit extra for fashion lovers.

Why I absolutely recommend this book
I recommend this book for the following reasons:
