Trenchcoat: een specifiek model van regenjas, traditioneel gemaakt uit gabardine, leer of popeline. Tegenwoordig bestaan er ook varianten in zijde, linnen en zelfs jeans. De jas werd oorspronkelijk gecreëerd voor soldaten tijdens Wereldoorlog I. De jas heeft nog steeds kenmerken van zijn oorspronkelijke militaire functie. Zo dienden de schouderbanden voor de bevestiging van bv. ranginsignes. Koning van de trenchcoats Burberry beweert de uitvinder te zijn van de jas. Maar Aquascutum trekt dit in twijfel. De naam trenchcoat komt van de 'trenches' (loopgraven) waarin de soldaten vochten.
Of Burberry nu de uitvinder van de trench is of niet, het Britse merk maakte de jas weer helemaal hip door meer modische uitvoeringen de catwalk op te sturen. Menig modegoeroe, waaronder Nina Garcia en Tim Gunn, noemen het een onmisbaar kledingstuk voor elke vrouw.

The coat was originally created for soldiers during World War I. The coat still shows signs of its original function. The shoulder straps for example were used to attach rank insignia. King of the trenchcoats Burberry claims to be the inventor of the coat. But Aquascutum says the same. The name trenccoats refers to the trenches in which the soldiers fought.
Whether Burberry is the inventor of the trench or not, the British brand made the coat fashionable again by sending more trendy versions down the runway. Many fashion gurus, like Nina Garcia and Tim Gunn, claim its an essential item in any woman's wardrobe.
