A trip to Cologne with Thalys - part 1: the outfit, the travelling, the Dome and Ludwig Museum
Vorig weekend heb ik Keulen herontdekt met de Thalys. Het was al ruim een decennium geleden dat ik er geweest ben. Er was zo veel te zien dat ik aan één blogpost niet genoeg heb, maar hieronder alvast deel 1.
Last weekend I rediscovered Cologne. It had been a decade since I last visited this city. There was so much to see that one blogpost isn't enough to tell all. Here you can read part 1.
Eerste opdracht nog voor te vertrekken: een comfortabele maar fashionable outfit kiezen. Ik opteerde voor jeans, altijd handig - tenzij het te warm zou worden -, een praktisch maar stylish topje van Derek Lam (thank you, Yoox!) en een zwarte blazer van By Malene Birger. Leren armbandjes en high heels maakten het plaatje compleet. En deze schoenen van Tim Van Steenbergen zijn echt supercomfortabel. Ik heb ze het hele weekend gedragen en geen pijn gehad aan mijn voeten (ook Compeed heb ik niet moeten boven halen).
Firts mission even before departing: selecting a comfortable but fashionable outfit. I opted for blue jeans, always easy - except if it would get too hot, a comfortable but stylish top by Derek Lam (thank you, Yoox!) and a black blazer by By Malene Birger. Leather bracelets and high heels completed the look. These shoes by Tim Van Steenbergen really are extremely comfortable. I wore them the whole weekend and didn't have sore feet (and I didn't need to use Compeed).
In Brussel namen ik en een vriendin de Thalys. We moesten vroeg opstaan, dus de comfortabele zetels van eerste klas waren zeker een pluspunt. Ook het ontbijtje smaakte. Toen we wat waren uitgerust lazen we alvast wat over Keulen.
My friend and I left with Thalys in Brussels. We had to get up quite early, so the comfortable chairs from first class were a definite plus. Also the little breakfast was a nice extra. When we were somewhat more awake we already read a bit about Cologne.
Na amper 1.47 uur reizen kwamen we aan in Keulen. Toen we uit het station kwamen, viel meteen hét landmark van Keulen, een zonovergoten Dom, op. De ideale manier om een stad binnen te komen.
After a mere 1.47 hour of travel we arrived in Cologne. When we left the station, we were immediately greeted by Cologne's most famous landmark, a sunbathed Dome. The ideal way to arrive in a city.
Daarna bezochten we het Ludwig Museum, meer bepaald de expo over Saul Steinberg 'The Americans'. Het is een aanrader, maar wie de expo nog wil bezoeken, zal snel moeten zijn, hij loopt nog tot 23 juni. Maar ook de rest van het indrukwekkende museum is de moeite waard. De collectie van het museum start bij het begin van de 20ste eeuw en behandelt de grote stromingen uit de Moderne Kunst. Denk bv. aan Picasso, Andy Warhol...en nog veel meer.
After arriving we visited the Ludwig Museum, namely the exhibition of Saul Steinberg 'The Americans'. I can recommend it, but who wants to see it will have to be fast as the exhibition ends June 23th. But also the other collections of this impressive museum are worth visiting. The collection at Museum Ludwig begins with the dawn of the 20th century and covers the major stations and currents in Modern Art. Think Picasso, Andy Warhol...and many, many more.
De expo toont de volledige collage-tableaus 'The Americans' van U.S. illustrator en cartoonist Saul Steinberg (1944-1999), voor de eerste keer sinds hij ze creëerde voor de wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel in 1958. Daarnaast toont de expo ook een selectie van zijn tekeningen uit de jaren 50 en een groot deel van zijn magazine-illustraties. Steinberg werd in Roemenië geboren en verhuisde naar de U.S. Hij raakte er gefascineerd door het dagelijkse leven en dat toont hij kritisch in zijn werk 'The Americans'. Van fashionista's die cocktails drinken en op hoge hakken New York onveilig maken (hoe toepasselijk voor een fashion blogger) tot baseball en het midwesten van Amerika. Steinberg is heel creatief qua materiaalgebruik: hij gebruikt behangpapier, papier van de in Amerika bekende 'brown bags', papier uit comics...
The exhibition shows the complete collage-tableaux 'The Americans' by U.S. illustrator and cartoonist Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) for the first time since he created it in 1958 for the Brussels World’s Fair. The mural collage is accompanied by a selection of related drawings from the 1950s and by a large number of the artist’s magazine illustrations. Steinberg was born in Romania and moved to the U.S. where he became fascinated with the everyday life of the American citizens. He shows this critically in the collage-mural 'The Americans'. He portrays all kinds of social scenes, from fashionistas sipping cocktails and roaming the streets of Manhattan in high heels (how apt for a fashion blogger) to baseball and the Midwest. He is creative in his use of materials, including wallpaper, and scraps of packing paper and comics...
