Spring colours at MoMu - new exhibition

Buiten mag het dan wel vriezen en sneeuwen: wie het Antwerpse ModeMuseum (MoMu) binnenwaait, komt vanzelf in een lieflijke lentewereld terecht. De prachtige stoffen en prints van de nieuwe expo doen bezoekers dromen van een zonnige én erg fashionable lentedag. Na het zien van de prachtige stoffen, kreeg ik meteen zin om prints te dragen - alhoewel ik meestal effen kleuren draag.
It may be freezing and snowing outside, but who wanders into the Antwerp fashion museum MoMu is transported to a beautiful spring day. The extraordinary fabrics and prints of the new exhibition make visitors dream of a sunny ànd fashionable spring. After seeing the gorgeous fabrics, I immediately felt like wearing prints, even though I don't usually wear a lot of prints.

The exhibition 'Couture in Colour' focuses on the basics of couture: luxury fabrics. The exhibition tells the story of the Swiss company Abraham Ltd. through the 20th century and shows that there is a whole history that precedes today's print craze in the fashion world.

De firma Abraham Ltd. werd opgericht in 1878 maar begint pas na WO II een echte rol van betekenis te spelen in de modewereld. De stoffen van Abraham Ltd. werden onder andere gebruikt door Dior, Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy en Yves Saint Laurent.
Abraham Ltd. was founded in 1878 but only started playing a role of importance in the fashion world after World War II. The fabrics of Abraham Ltd. were used by Dior, Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent.

The fabrics are beautiful and richly decorated, mostly with prints or embroidery. They are truly works of art and were mostly used for haute couture. Gustav Zumsteg was an important person in the history of the company. Fabrics were his passion, as some of his quotes illustrate, like "Silk is my destiny."

Vooral voor Balenciaga creëerde Abraham Ltd. ook effen stoffen. Deze waren verbazingwekkend genoeg de duurste stoffen. Ze werden gemaakt van zware stugge gazar-zijde omdat de ontwerper daarmee makkelijker zijn kenmerkende volumes kon creëren.
Mostly for Balenciaga Abraham Ltd. created fabrics without print. Astonishingly these were the most expensive fabrics. They were made from heavy and stiff gazar-silk. That way it was easier for the designer to create his signature sculptural volumes.

Het bedrijf sloot de deuren in 2002. Door de opkomst van de prêt-à-porter in de jaren 60 nam de vraag naar stoffen van topkwaliteit af. Op het vlak van stoffen ging de haute couture de mode op straat imiteren, terwijl het meestal net andersom is.
The company closed in 2002. Since the rise of prêt-à-porter in the sixties, the demand for fabrics of extraordinary quality diminished. Where fabrics are concerned, haute couture started copying the fashion on the street, while it is mostly the other way around.

In de zomer van 2007 schonk de Hulda und Gustav Zumsteg Foundation het textielarchief Abraham Ltd. aan het Landesmuseum in Zwitserland, waar het terecht als nationaal erfgoed beschouwd wordt. Nu brengt het MoMu er een eigen interpretatie van. Zo gaf het MoMu onder andere hedendaagse ontwerpers die veel met print werken de mogelijkheid om een interpretatie te geven van de Abraham-stoffen in de installatie 'Abraham revisited'.
In the summer of 2007 the Hulda and Gustav Zumsteg Foundation gave the textile archive Abraham Ltd. to the Landesmuseum in Switzeland, where it is considered national heritage. Now MoMu brings an own interpretation of the archive. MoMu gave contemporary designers who use a lot of the print for example the opportunity to give their interpretation of Abraham fabrics in the installation 'Abraham revisited'.

Op de tentoonstelling kan je ook zien hoeveel werk het is om een print op zijde te drukken. Elke kleur wordt één voor één op de stof gedrukt met behulp van sjablonen. Opvallend detail: zijde is altijd wit, de uiteindelijke kleur (hier, geel) wordt pas op het einde toegevoegd.
The exhibition shows how much work is needed to make a printed silk fabric. Each colour is printed seperately using stencil-plates. Remarkable detail: silk is always white, the actual colour (here, yellow) is only added in the end.

Opvallend hedendaags - surprisingly contemporary
Je hoeft maar even bij de boetiek Renaissance naast het ModeMuseum binnen te lopen om te zien hoe actueel prints in de mode zijn.
You only have to visit the store Renaissance, next to the ModeMuseum, to see how up-to-date prints are in the fashion world
